As you will have already found from your searching of games forums UbiSoft's policy has always been not to patch older games to be compatible with newer operating systems, although despite this Chessmaster 7000 and 8000 are officially badged as 'XP Compatible' by Microsoft (even though you have do make almost identical adjustments to the installation as you have already described to get 7000 to run, and 8000 MUST be installed in compatibility mode). There is no point in hinting there is a way 'round this: If you want to play in XP you will need a later version of Chessmaster (and ideally 9000 which is actually built as a 32-bit XP application). Maybe put 5500 online to sell and then upgrade? At this point, I'm thinking that a full dump and reinstall is almost as much of a hassle. I'm still having issues with the VMware server, however, I'm sure I'll eventually figure out the problem.
