Chessmaster Ware

Ok, long read. I have a copy of Chess Master 5500 I picked up in some random store in my travels. Before I installed it, I told WinXP to run the setup program in compatibility mode for Win95. During install it said there is a version conflict with some dll's odbcint.dll and odbccp32.dll. So in an attempt to be clever, I renamed the above and set the extension to 'crashnow' on both files.

I first bought Chessmaster Challenger, which was an old software program that was very disapointing. So I bought Chessmaster 10th edition hoping it would be better. Chinese Chess Stoneman is a master level and popular Chinese Chess Game. Chessmaster is undoubtedly the best established chess software series that dates back to the 1980s. Chessmaster XI is the latest addition to the franchise that has had input from the National Chess Champion Josh Waitzkin. Over on the Chessmaster forum, if I remember correctly, someone stated that they were playing it under Fusion.

I no longer see this error when installing. (I also am unable to reset the files to the originals while windows is running, but I can get around that if I have to) I have not attempted to reboot my machine since my stroke of brilliance, I'm not sure I want to. After installing, I set every file in the directory (that XP allowed me to) to run in compatibility mode for Win95. After the program loads, I see this error, and have seen it even before my foolish attempt at compatibility. Cannot load SMARTBRD.VXD I have done some research on the problem, and clearly the manufacturer of the game not only will not provide support, they blatantly refuse to do so. I have found forum after forum that says, I have a new coaster for my desktop.

Now, I've seen some very creative solutions to problems on this forum. This is by far one of the most challenging questions you may ever see in here. My question is, how do I get Chess Master 5500 to run under windows XP, Without having to purchase any other software to make it work? (this includes shareware, trial software etc.) I'm on a fixed income, and I can't afford it.

I'm fairly computer literate, and I am willing to try anything as long as it doesn't turn my machine into a paperweight. Star Wars Starfighter Pc Torrent more. Ready, set, Think! >>This is by far one of the most challenging questions you may ever see in here.

No pressure then! As you will have already found from your searching of games forums UbiSoft's policy has always been not to patch older games to be compatible with newer operating systems, although despite this Chessmaster 7000 and 8000 are officially badged as 'XP Compatible' by Microsoft (even though you have do make almost identical adjustments to the installation as you have already described to get 7000 to run, and 8000 MUST be installed in compatibility mode). There is no point in hinting there is a way 'round this: If you want to play in XP you will need a later version of Chessmaster (and ideally 9000 which is actually built as a 32-bit XP application). Maybe put 5500 online to sell and then upgrade? If you want to play 5500 you will need either a separate PC or a separate bootable FAT32 partition with Win98se (a 'Games Partition') on your own machine. That way you get neither paperweight nor coaster. But you will need Win98 and either some partitionig tools or to reformat and reinstall:(.

Thank you Barthax, after posting my response at 7:03 pm PST, I have only just finished installing the VMware virtual server and testing chessmaster 5500. At this point, I'm thinking that a full dump and reinstall is almost as much of a hassle. I'm still having issues with the VMware server, however, I'm sure I'll eventually figure out the problem. Knowing me, it's a Pebkac error. (problem exists between keyboard and chair) thank you for saving me from a dump and reinstall, I always forget to back something up, and don't miss it for a few months. Chess master runs great on that program in win98se. Again thanks very much.
