My InterpretationThe song recalls a memory; it was fairly popular for families to gather around their televisions to watch launches; it would basically blow their minds. It's also about the wonder and hope of the 60's, particularly in regards to the space program and technology. Saturn V () was a rocket used in a series of space programs in the late 60's. The awe and wonder described when watching a space mission, glorious to the song's narrator even on a 'monochromatic' television (black and white), is juxtaposed with the tragedy of the Kennedy assassination in 1963. Kennedy ('President 35') lobbied to increase the NASA budget during his presidency and was successful but unfortunately didn't live to see the results, such as US victory in the Space Race and, of course, the eponymous Saturn V. The song insinuates that Kennedy's death incites as much awe as Saturn V in action. Kennedy and his wife Jacqueline ('the lady crying by his side is the most beautiful woman alive') were famed for their youth, vigor, and photogenic good looks; the tragedy is not only shocking and horrible, but also full of beauty (in a sad, horrific way, of course.).
